Sparking the national campaign to honor outstanding Teachers across India, Nominations for ‘Guruvar Awards’ were invited recently . The Awards are an attempt to felicitate the Teacher who plays a significant role in shaping the future of the nation. The nominations on the website www.guruvar.com will be open from today till the 19th October, 2009.
The Guruvar Awards urges people across the nation to nominate a Teacher who has contributed immensely in their development and has had a huge impact on their lives. To be a part of this one has to simply visit the website www.guruvar.com and fill in a brief Nomination form. The form requires one to fill in details like name, gender, school, address, and 200 words on the role of the Teacher in molding them.
For strengthening the movement with the spirit of the whole nation, anyone and everyone can participate. While self-nominations are not allowed, Indian Teachers right from Primary to High schools can be nominated. Nominations are open to all schools located in India.
The categories under which entries would fall are ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, ‘Outstanding Indian Teacher’, ‘Outstanding Young Indian teacher’ and ‘Outstanding Indian teacher of Children with Special Needs’.
The criteria to be kept in mind while sending entries are simple.
· To nominate a Teacher for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, the Teacher needs to have dedicated an entire working life in the profession of teaching.
· To nominate a Teacher for the ‘Outstanding Indian Teacher Award’, the Teacher should be above the age of 30 years and should have devoted more than 5 years in teaching.
· To nominate a Teacher for the ‘Outstanding Young Indian Teacher Award’, the Teacher should be under the age of 30 years.
· There is no criterion to nominate a Teacher for the ‘Outstanding Indian Teacher for Children of Special Needs’.
The website was launched on the eve of Teacher’s Day by Dr. Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD). It has extensive information on the awards including categories, process and messages from eminent personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan who are supporting the cause for teachers.
Sunny Varkey, Founder and Chairman, GEMS Education and Chairperson of the Varkey Gems Foundation said, “These awards are aimed to go beyond the traditional ceremony. This is a very good opportunity for people to acknowledge their Teacher’s contribution in their lives. We are expecting an enthusiastic involvement from people across the nation.”
To be held in December this year, the award marks the establishment of a movement to acknowledge role of teachers in shaping the future of our nation. The nominations will begin around September with 48 teachers being recognized and felicitated for their invaluable contribution across four categories. The total prize money is Rs. 2 crore.
A Strategic Advisory Panel comprising of eminent personalities to guide the course of the awards will be appointed along with juries at various levels.
